The verb begot requires that Salah be a descendant of Arpachshad, not be adopted. He could be the son of Arpachshad's son, his grandson, or even his great-grandson, etc., except in this case the time frame only has room for a generation to interfere. There is of course a simple way to reconcile these stories because both are true. The term "begot" refers not only to boys but to grandchildren (or even great-grandchildren).
Both the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Jubilees agree with the Septuagint in making Salah the son of Cainan, adding information that his mother was Milca (daughter of Madai), while his wife was named Mu'ak, daughter of Kesed (another son of Arpachshad).
