BackPink floyd the rock band that wrote music history
Pink Floyd was one of the most influential and commercially successful rock bands ever. With more than 250 million sold record worldwide they wrote music history. Even today their songs are very popular and a number of tribute bands tour with Pink Floyd music around the world.
The time of Pink Floyd can be divided into three periods. The first was dominated by Syd Barrett, actually the founder of the band. Because of his mental breakdown due to drug abuse, he was replaced by David Gilmour. The second period which lasted until 1985 was dominated by Roger Waters. That was the most productive and successful time. Legal disputes followed after Waters left the band. David Gilmour then led Pink Floyd to a third successful period which ended in 2014 with the last album by the surviving band member Nick Mason and David Gilmour.

Classic (1973)
The Dark Side of the Moon is considered in modern music history one of the greatest albums. In the US Billboard 200 the album has charted astonishing for 950 weeks in total. On their concerts Pink Floyd performed the songs with quadraphonic sound which was at that time outstanding. With Wish Your Were Here the band created a tribute to Syd Barrett. However, when he visited Pink Floyd during the recording his health condition was so bad that the band members first did not recognize him. Animals was inspired by George Orwell's fable Animal Farm. For this album Mason and Wright did not get any credit in regard of contribution. Also tensions arouse since Waters more and more decided in which way the band should develop.

Intellectual (1978)
The Wall marked another highlight of the band and following to the album a movie was produced. During the production Wright was very passive and did not contribute more then “being a producer”. Therefore, Water said to he would have two options: “Have a long battle” to go or go and “leave quietly”. Water went for the second choice and left. The Final Cut then was that last album with Roger Waters. The band was completely at odds. Water wrote all lyrics and music and the two other along with session musician Michael Kamen produced the music. Roger Water left the band in 1985 and Richard Wright came back. The three members continued as Pink Floyd. Waters went to court and wanted that they were not allowed to use the name Pink Floyd. Finally the found a out-of-court agreement and in 2013 Waters stated that he regretted that move.

Post-Waters (1986)
A Momentary Lapse of Reason the first album without Water was written by David Gilmour. Commercially more successful then the previous released The Final Cut. The album was unlike previous albums not a concept album. The album included writing contributions from other songwriters, following Gilmour's decision to take material once intended for next solo album. The Division Bell released in 1994 was written mostly by David Gilmour and keyboardist Richard Wright. The album cover shows to faces which symbolizes the two absent band member which were Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. Gilmour's fiancée, novelist Polly Samson, supported with many of the lyrics. Unfortunately it was Pink Floyd last album with Richard Wright, who died in 2008.

The End (2014)
Drummer Nick Mason and guitarist David Gilmour took up a last project in 2013, with the idea to create "a 21st-century Pink Floyd album". The result was The Endless River the fifteenth and last studio album by Pink Floyd, released in November 2014 by Parlophone Records in Europe and Columbia Records in the rest of the world. Since Richard Wright died in 2008, he performed posthumously in the album. The album had record high pre-orders however the total sales were for good reasons much lower than the previous album. David Gilmour continued his career as successful solo musicians

Comments & Conclusions
A great rock band whit tragedy and glory.
The early years of Pink Floyd influenced by Syd Barrett were often celebrated enthusiastically by the professional music critics. However, looking back the real breakthrough took place in 1973 with The Dark Side of the Moon. That was also the time when they worked together most productively. Roger Water then took over more and more and dominated the band with his writing. When he left the band in 1985, he declared to the record company that Pink Floyd has seased to exist. Also, he drove Richard Wright out of the band because of not contributing enough. He was maybe not aware that the way he behaved in the years before was not an encouragement to the other band members. When David Gilmour disagreed and proclaimed that Pink Floyd will continue a nasty time broke out. Pink Floyd continued to play in front of big audiences the songs Roger Waters mainly wrote. He himself performed in small halls seeing many empty seats. Therefore, bitterness grew and bitter fights was the consequence. The sympathy seems not be on Rogers side since he was not ready to bear the consequences of his deeds. He did not understand that Pink Floyd is not only him and betrayed his colleagues. Even when he later regretted his behaviour a reunion with Pink Floyd was impossible. David Gilmour was not ready to even discuss that. Even today the tension between the two guys seems not be over. The recent announcement by Roger Waters who wants to get access to the official Pink Floyd webwide speaks for itself. It is a pity because a good co-operation between all of them especially with David would have brough forward much more unforgettable music.
